Award Nominee Comes to Caistor

Katie Spencer has very recently just be voted "Female artist of the year 2023" by Fatea Magazine.

Katie Spencer will play at Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre on Friday 11th October 2024 - Tickets Only £!2 are available from the Centre or on EventBrite.

Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music.

The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements.

Katie Spencer’s widely celebrated album, The Edge of the Land (2022), follows her debut release, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft, spell-binding
musicianship and crystal sonic clarity, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon, yet intimacy and introspection still remain.
The inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage, with a personal
connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music.

Her historical gig list is extensive, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. As live music has returned to our world, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more, eyes closed, in the moment, performing.

“Her articulate picking, with suggestions of folk and jazz, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music.” Guitarist Magazine

“One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.” RnR Magazine ★★★★★

“Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician.” Record Collector

“A timeless English folk album, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning.” Shindig!

“Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson and, to conjure a name we hear less often these days, Bridget St John.” Prog Magazine

“The way Katie plays is never contrived, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk
guitarist” – fRoots

“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song”

We Have Lift-Off!

Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin, the first human beings to set foot on the moon, will be blasting off at Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre at 7:30 pm on Thursday 3rd October. 55 years after they first landed, Martha Woodward (Armstrong) and Bobby Milner (Aldrin) will re-enact that first moon landing, performing a series of tasks set by Mission Control.

No expense has been spared in creating this unique production. The astronauts’ bespoke spacesuits have been lovingly created by one of Caistor Arts Centre’s Knit-and Natter Group, Joan Deakins. Joan had never made a spacesuit before. ‘It’s not something you do every day,’ she said but confessed herself very pleased with her handiwork. ‘I think my spacesuits will be perfect for landing on the moon. They look very nice.’

The moon landing is just one part of a whole evening of poetry and performance. Also taking part will be Caistor’s very own acapella group, the brilliant Bella Mamas, poets Catherine Scott (a woman with a grudge), Amanda Crundall and Martha plus the first-ever performance of a brand new Halloween song, written specially for the occasion and sung by Maura Cook.

‘It promises to be a different kind of evening,’ Martha enthused. ‘It should be a fun. There’s a lot going on. Admission is free. Come and join us on the moon!’

Two New Exhibitions Starting This Week

Caistor Through the Lens

The exhibition is in our Cafe Gallery. These are photographs by a group of locals who have been learning The Photo-Haiku Method with the support of local photographer Stewart Wall.

It is on NOW… until the Tuesday 4th June 2024.

The Photo-Haiku Method has been designed by Stewart Wall and is a powerful workflow usually used whilst on a Ginko (Photo-walk) to produce powerful and personal photography with an aim to create photo-haiku projects for photobooks and zines.

Potter Through a Lincolnshire Landscape.

The exhibition in our Gallery Room is by a Trio of artists:

The Little Acorn Pottery, Karen Dziuba Art & Tim Freer Art

This exhibition runs from 19th April through to 5th June 2024

The Little Acorn Pottery, as the name suggests, will be exhibiting and selling pottery ranging from decorative displays to functional ware i.e., mugs, yarn bowls, plant pots etc. All the items are handmade using a potter’s wheel or hand building techniques. The artists inspiration for her Spring 2024 collection is the flourishing frenzy of Spring.

Karen Dziuba Art, is art in textile and paint, showing sunset landscapes based on the Lincolnshire countryside. They will sit well with The Little Acorn Pottery’s work. In addition to the above work Karen will be showing brand new works that explore light and atmosphere in everyday situations

Tim Freer Art. Tim had not picked up a paintbrush or pencil for 35 years, until a change in circumstances and a move to Lincolnshire. This has inspired his love of art again. His works are now based on the resident wildlife, in particular British birds, hares & foxes

There will be a preview evening on Thursday the 18th June from 6pm – 8pm, where you will be able to meet all three of the artists.
